Tacardon hits winner as Teen Azkals down Singapore

MANILA — Teen Azkals defeated Singapore, 2-1, in the Asean Football Federation (AFF) U19 Championship at the Gelora Joko Samudro Stadium in Gresik, Indonesia on Sunday night.

Fidel Tacardon, reigning UAAP men’s football Rookie of the Year, scored the game-winning goal.

Tacardon blitzed past the Singaporean backline following a throw-in late into stoppage time and came to a very close distance inside the box to drill in the go-ahead goal.

Tacardon actually made a brace as he scored the first goal of the match in the first half.

Singapore made things interesting after equalizing earlier in the second half, but Tacardon’s winner gave the Teen Azkals the full three points.

With Indonesia only putting up a 1-0 win against Laos in Sidoarjo and Vietnam and Thailand settling for a goalless draw earlier Sunday, the Teen Azkals are on top of Group A after Matchday 1. (Ivan Stewart Saldajeno/PNA)
