New BJMP facility to decongest Dagupan city jail

SAN FABIAN, Pangasinan — The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Dagupan City will soon be decongested with the completion of a new facility situated on a 6,000-square meter land in Barangay Cayanga here.

BJMP city jail warden, Superintendent Kenneth Bid-ing, said in an interview Thursday that the construction of the new facility has started with more than PHP80-million funding allocated by the BJMP regional office.

A private citizen has donated the lot for the new facility, he revealed. “We are so grateful,” he added.

“With its land area, between two to three buildings can be put up and can accommodate at least 1,000 inmates,” Bid-ing said.

He said based on the initial proposal, inmates detained in BJMP Dagupan who are not from the city will be transferred to the new facility upon its completion.

“At present, BJMP-Dagupan has 1,067 inmates but the facility was designed for 350 to 400 inmates only.  It does not only house inmates from Dagupan City, but also inmates from 3rd and 4th districts of the province,” Bid-ing said.

He added that over the years, they have been undertaking the expansion of the BJMP-Dagupan’s facility in order to provide a more comfortable and livable place for the inmates. (Hilda Austria/PNA)
