LAOAG CITY — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has been reaching out to more learners in the province, giving them better access to various information even without internet connection.

Joven Viernes, provincial director of the DOST based in Batac City, said Wednesday one unit of Starbooks (Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Station) was turned over to the provincial library located at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena on Monday.

Prior to this, some 11 units were also distributed to selected schools in the province, particularly in Batac City and the towns of Badoc, Banna, Currimao, Dingras, Marcos, Nueva Era, Paoay, Pinili, San Nicolas and Solsona.

As the first Philippine science digital library of the DOST, the kiosk is available for use all day at the provincial library.

“The stand-alone onsite research kiosk provides free science and technology (S&T) information for academic and livelihood use even without internet connection,” said Viernes.

The kiosk contains thousands of digitized scientific information sourced out from local and foreign linkages, subscription, archive collections, and in-house publications contained at the DOST’s Science Information Network.

It also features science and technology information on food and nutrition, health and medicine, emerging technologies, energy, environment, appropriate livelihood technologies, investigative projects and theses in different fields that exist in the country.

These are accessible in various formats such as text, video and audio. (Leilanie Adriano/PNA)
