TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite – Cavite province has recorded a total of 24 leptospirosis with four deaths in the past seven months this year, the Cavite Provincial Health Office (PHO) reported Wednesday.

PHO Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (PEISU), headed by Dr. Nelson C. Soriano, said that the 24 cases of leptospirosis were detected in January with two cases; February – 5; April – 2; June – 12; and July – 3.

Leptospirosis cases were discovered in the cities of Cavite, Bacoor, Dasmariǹas, Imus, General Trias and Trece Martires and the towns of Ternate, Tanza, Silang and Naic, the PEIU report showed.

The four death tolls during the period January to July were mostly male patients with ages 26, 33, 45 and 49.

Two of those who died are from Cavite City, one in Tanza town, and another in Dasmariǹas City, PEIU report showed.

Leptospirosis is caused by Leptospirae virus that is transmitted through open wounds when the floodwaters contaminated with rodents’ urine enter the body system it said.

Infected persons sometimes experience no symptoms at all, or mistake the symptoms to headache, fever, vomiting and redness of the eyes or other diseases.

If left untreated early on, the disease may cause kidney failure and damage other organs

PHO advised local health officials in Cavite’s seven cities and 16 municipalities that in order to prevent more incidence of leptospirosis cases in the province they have to provide those who got stuck in floodwaters with preventive medicine. (Gladys Pino/PNA)
