Victims of monsoon waves in Davao get aid

DAVAO CITY – Special Assistant to the President (SAP) Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go has extended aid to the victims of strong monsoon waves in Barangay 76-A, Bucana, here on Thursday.

Go led the distribution of construction materials such as wood, roofing materials and some food packs to the 42 residents in the area whose houses were washed out by monsoon waves on Sunday.

Go said the donations were from friends in the private and government sectors.

“Let me clarify that I did not own the donations here–I am just helping extend the aid from the government and private sector,” Go said.

Go turned-over to Barangay Captain of 76-A Rolando Trajera other items, such as pillows, blankets, mats, cooking materials, clothes and hygiene kits for the affected families.

Dependent on fishing as their primary means of livelihood, the affected residents have been particularly hit hard when the giant waves destroyed their fishing boats.

“May lumapit sa akin na nasira ang kanyang bangka pati rin yung fishing nets nila so, tutulong kami (Someone approached me telling that his fishing boat was damaged as well as their fishing nets so we will help them),” Go said.

Go also asked his supporters to use their money in assisting the victims rather than spending it on billboards to urge him to run for the Senate. He said he has no intention of seeking a Senate seat.

Village chief Trajera said the assistance facilitated by Go meant a lot to the affected families.

Trajera said the huge monsoon waves hit the coastal community on July 15-17 and left at least eight houses damaged and other properties destroyed.  (Armando Fenequito Jr/PNA)
