Heavy rains cause floods, traffic in Metro Manila

MANILA — Torrential rains and thunderstorms brought about by the southwest monsoon or habagat on Friday morning caused heavy traffic congestion in several areas of Metro Manila, leaving commuters stranded and vehicles caught in floods.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported flooding in the following areas:

  • EDSA before Aguinaldo Gate northbound – gutter deep, passable to all types of vehicles
  • Araneta Victory (EDSA-Cubao) northbound and southbound – knee deep, not passable to all types of vehicles
  • EDSA Mother Ignacia southbound – gutter deep, passable to all types of vehicles
  • EDSA Aurora tunnel northbound and southbound – gutter deep, passable to all types of vehicles
  • EDSA Santolan service road northbound – gutter deep, passable to all types of vehicles
  • EDSA Main Avenue northbound and southbound – gutter deep, passable to all types of vehicles
  • EDSA Ortigas POEA southbound – gutter deep, passable to all types of vehicles
  • EDSA Ortigas before flyover – gutter deep, passable to all types of vehicles
  • Lacson Avenue northbound and southbound – gutter deep, passable to all types of vehicles
  • Araneta Ave.-E.Rodriguez intersection is knee deep and not passable to all types of vehicles

The MMDA has dispatched one military truck and one bus to ferry stranded passengers along Commonwealth Avenue-LITEX, Joint Quick Response Team Spokesperson Aileen Lizada said.

Metro Manila will be experiencing partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms throughout the day, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said. (Aerol John Pateña/PNA)
