Davao City mulls ban on single-use plastics

DAVAO CITY –The city government is mulling a ban on the use of single-use plastics to protect the environment.

The ban was discussed during the meeting of the department heads on Monday at City Hall, where the officials agreed to remove single-use plastics during meetings — especially bottled water.

City Administrator Zuleika Lopez noted that the concern for the environment is not just the concern of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) but everybody.

“It has been found out that much of the garbage generated is composed of plastics. In our own way in the city government of Davao we’re coming up with a policy to ban the use of plastic in all our meeting, conferences, etc.,” she said in an interview Tuesday.

Lopez said all departments are now encouraged to bring their own cups during meetings to avoid the use of plastics.

“This will go a long way to prevent the increase of plastics in our garbage,” she added.

The executive department also endorsed a proposed resolution to the City Council to enact an ordinance banning the use of single-use plastics. It has also encouraged the use of reusable alternatives during official events.

Solid Waste Management is one of the 10 priority agenda of Mayor Sara Duterte.

Mayor Sara has earlier created the Bantay Dagat program that aims to maintain cleanliness along the city’s coastal areas. (Funny Pearl Gajunera/PNA)
