Marines present seized NPA firearms, IEDs to Wescom chief

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan — Authorities presented the firearms, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), ammunition, and other subversive items recovered from an encampment of the New People’s Army (NPA) that was overran by government troops in Barangay Quinlogan, Quezon town, to Lt. Gen. Rozzano Briguez of the Western Command (Wescom) on Sunday morning.

Lt. Col. Darwin de Luna, commander of the 4th Marine Battalion Landing Team and Joint Task Group South (JTGS), and Col. Charlton Sean Gaerlan, commander of the 3rd Marine Brigade and the Joint Task Force Peacock (JTFP), led the presentation of recovered weapons to Briguez and other military officials.

The weapons and ammunition were recovered on August 8 following clearing operations at the site where a 45-minute firefight between the rebels and government troops.

Two insurgents were also arrested, but it was not clear if they were also presented to Briguez.

“After the clearing operations following the firefight, more items were recovered from the encounter site, including two IEDs, sniper scope, ammunition, cell phones, hand-held radios, uniforms, medical paraphernalia and other personal items of the CPP-NPA terrorists,” a post by Wescom on its social media page said. (Celeste Anna Formoso/PNA)
