Cabbie faces assault case for injuring traffic enforcer

DAVAO CITY – A taxi driver is now facing a case of direct assault for causing injuries on a traffic enforcer over an issuance of a citation ticket for breach of traffic laws on Friday.

Senior Insp. Maria Teresita Gaspan, the spokesperson of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), on Sunday said the case was filed on Saturday at the City Prosecutors Office by traffic enforcer Julius Regidor Raquel against Dario Liton Simborio, 36, the driver of Misis taxi cab and a resident of Digos City, Davao del Sur.

The 40-year-old Raquel was manning traffic on the corner of Quirino Avenue and Pichon St., Bankerohan when he stopped Simborio for seat belt law violation.

Raquel said he asked for Simborio’s driver’s license but the latter refused. This prompted the traffic enforcer to get on the cab and instructed the driver to drive towards City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) for the proper disposition of his violation.

On their way to CTTMO, police said both had a heated altercation and they got off along McArthur Highway, Matina. Moments later, the driver hurriedly boarded his taxi and drove away with Raquel still holding the front passenger’s door. As a result, the traffic enforcer was dragged 10-15 meters.

Raquel sustained arm injuries, police said.

Simborio abandoned the traffic enforcer and surrendered to the Talomo Police Precinct. (Rhoda Grace Saron/PNA)
