MANILA — The Contact Center Association of the Philippines (CCAP) and National Privacy Commission (NPC) are poised to bolster their partnership to increase Filipinos’ level of awareness of data privacy and security.
The CCAP will host the Data Privacy Asia 2018 in Makati City on Sept. 19-20, which will focus on global data privacy and cybersecurity issues, and how they impact the local industry, particularly the contact center sector.
More than 400 delegates from the Philippines and abroad are expected to join the conference.
NPC Chairman Raymund Liboro lauded CCAP for conducting the annual conference in Manila for two consecutive years now. “In the last two-and-a-half years since the Commission was organized under my watch, industry observers would agree that a lot of positive things have happened (where) data privacy awareness and compliance in the Philippines are concerned,” he said.
“Protecting data privacy generally gained a priority status in companies’ operational agenda, with some even beginning to demonstrate a rather mature level of compliance,” he added.
The official noted that the level of awareness of Filipinos about data privacy has been improving. He said that from only five inquires NPC used to receive per month, the agency now gets about 1,080 inquiries monthly.
The NPC has attended to a total of 657 complaints-related inquiries, breach notifications, and formal complaints since 2017. Majority of these were from 2018, according to Liboro. Some 443 complaints were resolved by the NPC to date.
On the other hand, as the Data Privacy Act of 2012 requires all organizations to assign data protection officers (DPOs), there are now 22,816 DPOs registered with NPC. “Indeed, data privacy is really going mainstream,” Liboro said.
“This is how much data privacy has advanced in the country in such a short span of time. While there is much work that needs to be done, we are confident that the entire data privacy community is moving in the right direction,” he added. (Kris Crismundo/PNA)
