Zambo health office notes ‘sporadic’ HFMD cases

ZAMBOANGA CITY — The City Health Office is closely monitoring cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) in this city to prevent its spread.

City Health Officer, Dr. Dulce Amor Dagalea-Miravite, said Saturday they have noted sporadic cases of HFMD since January.

Miravite said they have so far registered 10 cases of HFMD – one each in February and March; three each in May and July; and two this month.

“There are sporadic cases of HFMD, that’s why we are closely monitoring the situation to prevent the increase or spread of the disease,” she said.

HFMD is a viral infection, she said, adding that “if the immune system of the patient is strong, it is self-limiting for seven to 10 days.”  Its symptoms include fever and rashes in hand, foot, and mouth. A person can be afflicted with the disease through infected secretion.

Miravite advised the public to seek immediate medical consultation once they manifest its symptoms. HFMD can be prevented through proper hygiene and sanitation, she added. ( R. G. Antonet Go/PNA)
