Comelec fields special registration teams for Bangsamoro plebiscite

MANILA — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will field special registration teams on Sept. 4-6 to conduct special registration in connection with the plebiscite for the establishment of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (BAR), as provided in the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL).

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said the establishment of the teams is in addition to the satellite registration being held in various parts of the country.

“The Comelec will be conducting intensified registration activities, in connection with #BOL plebiscite preparations,” the poll body official said.

Based on the proposed BAR, the provinces eyed for inclusion are the current provinces under the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao – the provinces of Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.

Also being eyed for inclusion are 39 barangays in North Cotabato, six municipalities in Lanao del Norte, and the cities of Cotabato in Maguindanao, and Isabela in Basilan.

The plebiscite is seen to be held by early January 2019.

The system of continuing registration of voters resumed last July 2 and will run until September 29. (Ferdinand Patinio/PNA)
