ILOILO CITY — Fifty-four families in the provinces of Guimaras and Antique are still in evacuation centers as a preemptive measure to ensure their safety, as Typhoon Ompong’s rains and winds persisted in Western Visayas on Saturday.
Regional Director Jose Roberto R. Nuñez of the Office of Civil Defense 6 (Western Visayas) assured on Saturday that the evacuees were provided with proper assistance by their provincial disaster risk reduction management councils.
“They have to evacuate for safety and security reasons,” Nuñez said.
In Guimaras, Nuñez said that 45 families, composed of 160 individuals, whose houses are located in the coastal village of Nueva Valencia, which is prone to storm surges, are staying at the evacuation centers at the town’s mainland.
Nine families or 44 people in San Remigio, Antique also left their homes as their area is prone to landslide.
“If the rains will continue, there might be a mudslide. It is better for them to just stay at the evacuation centers for the meantime,” he said.
As of this writing, Nuñez said there has been no major damage caused by typhoon “Ompong”.
There is no reported flooding and landslide so far, he said.
But he advised the public to stay vigilant because the region is expected to continue experiencing rains and winds in the coming days. (Cindy Ferrer/PNA)
