Ex-VP Binay to run for congressman in 2019

MANILA — Former Vice President Jejomar Binay will seek a congressional seat in the 2019 midterm elections, his spokesperson said Monday.

The older Binay will run under the ticket of her daughter, Makati Mayor Abby Binay, who will also seek a re-election.

“I am confirming that former VP Binay will run as Representative for the First District under the ticket of Mayor Abby,” Salgado said.

Binay, who ran for president in the 2016 polls, conceded to Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte four days after the election, when partial and unofficial tally of votes from the Commission on Elections transparency server showed that the latter was poised to win the presidency.

Salgado’s remarks were echoed by the lady mayor in an announcement during Monday’s flag-raising ceremony at the Makati City Hall.

She awarded a Certificate of Honor and a Loyalty Certificate to her father, who served as Makati mayor from 1986 to 1998, and from 2001 to 2010.

“Isang napakalaking karangalan na tumayo sa isang entablado kasama ang tao na nagturo at nagpakita sa akin ng tunay na katapatan sa serbisyo, ang mahal ng Makati, ang aking ama na si Jojo Binay! (It is a great honor to be standing on the same platform with the person who taught and showed me genuine loyalty to public service, Makati’s beloved, my father Jojo Binay),” the Makati mayor said.

The city paid tribute to Binay for his leadership that “has brought Makati to a new era of unprecedented growth which led to the implementation of innovative and groundbreaking programs for the upliftment of the lives of Makatizens during his years of service to the city.

“He is a public servant worth emulating and from whom government employees can take inspiration,” read the inscription on the certificate. (Christopher Lloyd Caliwan/PNA)
