Calabarzon LGUs get ‘seal of good local governance’

BACOOR CITY, Cavite — About 24 local government units (LGUs) in Region IV-A (Calabarzon) bagged this year’s Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) awards from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

The awardees included the provinces of Laguna and Quezon, while 16 municipalities and six component cities made it to the list of recipients that met the “all or nothing” criteria to get the prestigious award.

The municipal awardees were: the Batangas towns of Bauan and Taal; Laguna towns of Kalayaan, Pagsanjan, and Pakil; Quezon towns of Gumaca, Mauban, Panukulan, and San Antonio; Rizal towns of Binangonan and Pililla; and Cavite’s Kawit, Maragondon, Magallanes and Rosario.

The six city awardees were: Calamba, Biñan, San Pedro, and Sta. Rosa in Laguna; Tanauan City in Batangas; and the City of Bacoor in Cavite.

The DILG’s SGLG award uses standards and criteria that promote good governance, transparency, and effective and efficient public services.

The SGLG award symbolizes the locality’s integrity and good performance through continuing governance reform and sustained local development, a progressive assessment system adopted by the DILG to give distinction to remarkable local government performance across several areas.

Among the core areas for assessment of component cities and 1st to 3rd class municipalities are their financial administration, disaster preparedness, social protection, including peace and order.

Also looked into are business-friendliness and competitiveness, environmental management, tourism promotion and development, and cultural heritage promotion and conservation. (Gladys Pino/PNA)
