Zambo solon sets ‘Chabacano’ song contest

ZAMBOANGA CITY — The first congressional district office is holding a Chabacano Song competition to produce more talents and propagate the local dialect through music.

First District Rep. Celso Lobregat on Thursday said the competition, “Concurso de Canciones de Chabacano 2018, will be held on Saturday, October 6, in partnership with the Fundacion Academia Lenguaje Chabacano del Zamboanga Inc.

Lobregat said the competition is an innovation from the traditional Chabacano Song Festival, which features local composers and singers performing the traditional way as practiced in the past.

He expressed hopes the competition would sustain the legacy of her mother, the late Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat, who was known for her initiatives to preserve the “Lenguaje Chabacano.”

The lawmaker underscored the importance of preserving the local language “to instill to the minds and hearts of the residents that our unique local language is still alive and being nurtured by the present generations of Zamboangueños.”

The contest will be held at 5 p.m. at the Social Hall of the Western Mindanao State University with the participation of important guests and performers.

The elimination round will be at 3 p.m. Friday, October 5, at the Red Cross Training Center along Rizal Street.

Entry forms are available at his office in Nuñez street, Barangay Zone 3, and must be submitted with the lyrics of the respective composition before the scheduled eliminations. (Teofilo Garcia, Jr/PNA)
