Global Finance gives BSP chief B+ grade

MANILA — Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Nestor A. Espenilla Jr. received a B+ grade from the Global Finance magazine’s Central Banker Report Cards 2018, his first scorecard after taking the helm in July 2017.

The magazine did not give Espenilla a grade in 2017 saying then that it was ‘too early to say.”

The magazine gives out grades of “A” for the highest up to “F” for the lowest performers. It bases its grading of central bankers on success on inflation control, economic growth goals, currency stability, and interest rate management.

Joseph Giarraputo, in a statement, said “central bankers are confronting a perfect storm of challenges, from unwinding quantitative easing to shielding economies from political upheavals.”

“Our scorecards for these public finance leaders show who is maintaining control and moving forward, and who is struggling against slippery political or economic changes,” he added.

The full report on the Central Banker Report Cards 2018 will be featured on the magazine’s October 2018 issue.

Former BSP chief Amando Tetangco Jr. has been cited as among the Grade A central bankers in the past, specifically from 2006-07 and 2011-15.
