Ilocos Norte inmates undergo training in electronics

LAOAG CITY – At least 30 inmates at the Ilocos Norte Provincial Jail (INPJ) underwent training on electronics on Monday.

Sponsored by the Pinili Polytechnic College in cooperation with the Technical Education Skills and Development Authority (TESDA), a number of practical skills training are also being offered to provincial inmates if they wish to become more productive while in jail or they can find work after they are released.

Benilda Sadian, provincial jail warden and officer in charge, said the inmates’ training courses are baking and pastry, manufacturing, mechanics, carpentry, and electronics, among others.

“Some of their products are then sold to government-initiated trade fairs, so they can also earn for a living,” she said.

As of this posting, there are 431 inmates at the INPJ, 30 of them are women.

As one of the priority programs of the government is to provide employment opportunities to all, TESDA Provincial Director Charito Santos said.

He added that TESDA also offers free skills training particularly to the unemployed and marginalized sectors.

The most in-demand courses today include construction works, motorcycle and small engine servicing for men, cookery, and bread and pastry production for women. (Leilanie Adriano/PNA)
