Cargo, passenger vessels collide off Cebu sea

CEBU CITY — A cargo ship and a passenger vessel collided off Lauis Ledge in Talisay City on Thursday evening.

Philippine Coast Guard-Central Visayas (PCG-7) spokesman Lt. Junior Grade Mike Encina on Friday said four people were injured during the collision.

Encina said they received the alarm past 8 p.m. Thursday and found that M/V Ocean United, a cargo ship of Oceanic Shipping Lines, slammed on M/V FastCat M11, which was carrying about 70 passengers.

The impact caused heavy damage on the stern of the fast craft, tearing off its roof and some of the passenger seats.

The injured passengers were identified as Daniel Fuentes, 38; Manuel Veloso Jr., 48; Anacleto Dico Jr., 47; and Cary Angelo Bilga, 28.

Encina said only Fuentes, Veloso, and Dico were brought to the hospital for treatment, as Bilga just suffered minor injuries.

Ocean United and FastCat M11, which was bound for Tubigon in Bohol at the time of the collision, are now docked at Pier 3 while the Coast Guard is still investigating the incident.

Encina said no discharge of oil or oil spill was detected at the collision site.

Investigation is still ongoing to determine what caused the collision. (Luel Galarpe/PNA)
