Bukidnon athletes to get more incentives

MALAYBALAY CITY — The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (Provincial Board) of Bukidnon has approved an ordinance increasing incentives of athletes who win in competitions and expand the sports program’s rewards.

The board unanimously approved Proposed Ordinance No. 072-2018 sponsored by Board Member Jay Albarece during the third and final reading on Tuesday.

The ordinance also expanded the definition of what constitutes an “athlete”, which now includes non-students, tribal persons, and persons with disabilities (PWD).”

Once signed by Governor Jose Ma. R. Zubiri Jr., all athletes who will represent Bukidnon and win medals in regional, national and international competitions will receive cash rewards.

Gold medalists for individual events at the regional level will get PHP10,000; silver medalists, PHP8,000; and bronze medalists, PHP5,000. For team events, gold medalists will be given PHP20,000; silver medalists, PHP15,000; and bronze medalists PHP10,000.

At the national level, gold medalists for individual events will receive PHP50,000; silver medalists, PHP30,000; and bronze medalists, PHP20,000. For team events, gold medalists are entitled to get PHP100,000; silver medalists, PHP50,000; and bronze medalists PHP30,000.

Earlier, Albarece acknowledged the old reward system was discriminatory in that it focused on student-athletes winning at the regional and national levels, and only on sports competitions sanctioned by the Department of Education. (Mel Madera/PNA)
