Samsung feted for digital literacy drive with TESDA

MANILA — Samsung Electronics Philippines Corporation was feted on Wednesday evening for its digital literacy advocacy in the Philippines, such as its partnership with government agency Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

Along with other Korean companies in the country, the information technology firm’s efforts were recognized at the 2018 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Awards for Korean Companies in the Philippines, hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, the Korean Chamber of Commerce Philippines, and the Asian Institute of Management.

The award is a recognition for Korean companies’ outstanding CSR activities in local communities.

Most of the awardees were chosen for their efforts to build smart classrooms, scholarship provision, and humanitarian support during times of calamities, specifically the Marawi crisis.

At the awarding ceremony, a Samsung representative said the company uses technology and innovation in providing access to smarter learning environments.

Apart from providing smart classrooms in some areas in the country, Samsung also has a digital literacy campaign.

Samsung has provided equipment and other training materials and tools for the TESDA-Samsung electronics lab located inside the agency’s complex in Bicutan, Taguig City. The lab serves as a venue to train students to be more competitive in the electronics industry.

Samsung’s technical inputs were integrated into TESDA’s Consumer Electronics Servicing curriculum. With this program, students are taught how to repair and maintain audio systems, appliances, mobile phones, and other electronic products.

Meanwhile, Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Han Dong-man is encouraging Korean companies to be more active in their CSR activities, so they could contribute more to the Philippines’ national development.

The other awardees were Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc., LG Electronics Philippines, Inc., Hyundai Rotem Manila branch, KEB Hana Bank Manila branch, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, and KEPCO Philippines Corporation.

Certificates of recognition were given to Shinhan Bank Manila branch, DOOSAN Heavy Industries, ILSUNG Construction Co, Ltd., Asiana Philippines GSA, Inc., and POSCO Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd.  (Ma. Cristina Arayata/PNA)
