BACOLOD CITY — Negros Occidental will mark the 120th year of the “Cinco de Noviembre,” the commemoration of the Negros Revolution against the Spanish colonizers, in various rites on Monday.

Republic Act 6709 declares every November 5 a special non-working holiday in Negros Occidental.

In Bacolod City, the provincial government will hold a program at the Capitol grounds in the morning to recognize Negrense centenarians.

In the evening, a tribute will be held for this year’s five outstanding Negrense awardees at the Capitol Social Hall.

The province will honor Olivia Yanson for humanitarian work; Cherrie de Erit Atilano, sustainable agri-tourism; Jeannette Patindol, academe and literature; Roberto Montelibano, business and entrepreneurship; and the Negros Historical Council Inc., history and culture.

This year’s theme is “Pasidungog sa mga Bag-o nga Baganihan sang Probinsya (Honoring Modern-day Heroes of the Province)”.

Separate rites will also be held in the neighboring cities of Bago, Talisay and Silay, hometowns of the Negrense revolutionary heroes.

Meanwhile, Bago City will commemorate anew the Nov. 5, 1898 revolution with the “Sigabong sang mga Kanyon” and fancy drill competitions.

After a thanksgiving mass at the St. John the Baptist Church in the morning, a short program and floral offering will be held at the monument of Gen. Juan Araneta led by Mayor Nicholas Yulo and Vice Mayor Ramon Torres.

The city’s 24 barangays will participate in the “Sigabong sang mga Kanyon competition.”

Nine participating units of the 10th Bago City Fancy Drill competition will showcase their performance during the civic-military parade with the street fancy drill. (Nanette Guadalquiver/PNA)
