Rosal pushes total firecracker ban in Legazpi City

LEGAZPI CITY — The local chief executive here wants a total ban on firecrackers this December to ensure safe celebration of Christmas and New Year.

City Mayor Noel Rosal, in a press conference on Monday, said he wants to push this early the Sangguniang Panlunsod of Legazpi to create an ordinance banning the selling of any kind of firecrackers in the city.

The mayor said he would also issue an Executive Order (EO) banning the use of firecrackers in all 70 barangays of the city to avoid any accident among villagers.

“I want to implement the total ban of firecrackers like what President Rodrigo Duterte did in Davao City for the safety of the community during the Yuletide season,” Rosal said.

He added that he would not establish a common or community firecracker zone. “All I want is a total ban on firecrackers in Legazpi City. No permit would also be issued to all businessmen for selling of firecrackers and pyrotechnics,” he said.

Data from the Department of Health (DOH) regional office in Bicol showed there were 29 cases of firecracker injuries in December 2017, of which five were from Legazpi. (Jorge Hallare/PNA)
