DUMAGUETE CITY — Instead of doing their regular exercise, the police here will start making use of their calisthenics days to clean up the city.
Dumaguete police chief, Supt. Jonathan Pineda, said Tuesday he coined the term “pulots-thenics” — the Cebuano root word of which is “pulot”, or to pick up plastics, candy wrappers, cigarette butts and other garbage along the roads where the cops are deployed.
He said he thought of the clean up after a group of environmentalists paid him a visit, where discussions centered on how the police could help in the cleanliness and environmental preservation campaign of the city.
Pineda said he offered to utilize at least one day of their calisthenics to pick up garbage along the streets instead of just playing basketball, running, and doing other forms of exercise to achieve fitness.
Due to manpower concerns, “pulots-thenics” will, however, depend on the availability of personnel, especially with the forthcoming fiesta celebration of the city, he noted.
Pineda said the police will embark on the cleanup drive to also encourage participation from the barangays, schools, and other organizations who would want to contribute to the cleanliness of the city.
