New MPD chief leads surprise drug test

MANILA — Newly-appointed Manila Police District (MPD) Acting Director, Senior Supt. Vicente Danao, spearheaded a surprise drug test on 110 MPD officers and personnel on Tuesday.

In a statement Wednesday, the MPD said the test was conducted before the start of the regular command conference.

Danao was the first one to undergo drug test and he was followed by the members of the Command Group, Station Commanders and PCP Commanders.

He said the conduct of the random drug test shows that the MPD leadership is serious in wiping out scalawags within the organization, stressing that a more comprehensive and holistic approach in weeding out misfits should start from within.

He said MPD personnel who will be found positive of illegal drug use and involvement in illegal drug syndicates shall be sanctioned accordingly and will be subjected to dismissal from police service.

Danao also said the new leadership of MPD ensures unwavering and steadfast performance of its mandate and duties in serving and protecting the people, and in maintaining the peace and security of the country’s capital city.

The new drug tests came after the mandatory drug test done recently also at the MPD on orders of NCRPO head, Director Guillermo Eleazar, and in the wake of the arrest of PO1 Redentor Bautista, who was reportedly caught in the act of sniffing cocaine inside a bar in Taguig.

Eleazar, ordered all policemen in the metropolis to be ready for random drug tests as part of the PNP’s efforts to weed out drug users from its ranks.
