Iloilo taps youth in campaign vs. vandalism

ILOILO CITY — The local government here and the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) are partnering with the youth in an all-out war against vandalism.

The “Ilonggo Kontra Vandalismo” is part of the cleanliness campaign of the city government, said Mayor Jose Espinosa III on Monday.

“We will approach the children and ask their commitment to partner with us in cleaning the city from vandals. We will inculcate into their minds that committing vandalism will not bring them any good,” he added.

The campaign was formally launched in this city over the weekend with the partner individuals and organizations making known their commitment to join the campaign.

In his message during the launching, the mayor emphasized that school walls, overpass, public places, government buildings and private structures are easy targets for vandalism. The most common of which is the graffiti.

“Graffiti, when done in a form of murals, can be appreciated. But when it is just an act of gang members trying to splash the paint with their identity to encourage others to join them, that’s when proper authorities should get involved to get rid of the problem,” he said.

The mayor thus urged that children be guided “on how to deal with their creative side in a way that they are not harming anything”.
