ILOILO CITY – Guimaras Governor Samuel Gumarin on Tuesday signed Executive Order 74, declaring the cancellation of classes in all levels in both public and private schools on Wednesday (Nov. 21).
“Tropical Depression Samuel is expected to make a landfall tonight and would likely affect the province of Guimaras with light to moderate rains on Wednesday,” he said.
The information office of the province also announced that a series of games scheduled on Nov. 21, in line with the provincial sports meet, will be cancelled.
“The new schedule for the cancelled games will be announced once the schedule is determined by the Department of Education (DepEd),” the information office said.
Ahead of the two declarations, the governor through Memorandum Order 66 also placed the whole province under blue alert. This puts on standby all resources of the local government unit.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Service Administration (PAGASA) placed Western Visayas provinces, including Guimaras, under tropical cyclone warning Signal No. 1.
In its advisory, the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) said under Signal No. 1, the impact of the wind is very light to medium on high risk structures and there will also be slight damage to some houses made of very light materials or makeshift structures in exposed communities.
Some plants will be tilted, twigs of small trees maybe broken, and rice crops may suffer significant damage when on its flowering stage.
