Caloocan bishop hails guilty verdict vs. cops in Kian slaying

MANILA — A Catholic prelate said justice still prevails in the country after a Caloocan City Regional Trial Court (RTC) on Thursday convicted three policemen for the death of Kian Lloyd delos Santos in August 2017.

“Thank you, Lord! This is a good sign that the justice system in the country still works,” Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David said in a message sent to Church-run Radyo Veritas.

With this, David is hoping that the decision of Caloocan RTC Branch 125 will encourage witnesses to killings to have the courage to testify and fight.

“We hope that this ruling will encourage the family of the victims of many deaths or those who allegedly resisted arrest. But what is important is for them to have the courage to stand up and testify and show evidence,” David added.

The 17-year-old delos Santos was gunned down for allegedly selling illegal drugs last August.

The Caloocan RTC found three policemen — PO3 Arnel Oares, PO1 Jeremias Pereda and PO1 Jerwin Cruz — guilty of killing the teenager and sentenced them to reclusion perpetua or approximately 40-year jail term.
