Zambo City to cancel 309 tricycle franchises

ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Tricycle Adjudication Board (TAB) is set to cancel 309 franchises to operate motorized tricycles that were not renewed for a period of three years.

Erlinda Mandi-Luelo, TAB riding public representative, said Thursday the cancellation of unrenewed franchises is pursuant to Ordinance 185, otherwise known as the tricycle ordinance of this city.

Luelo said the City Council’s committee on franchise, headed by Councilor Rommel Agan, has also concurred with TAB’s decision to cancel the unrenewed tricycle franchises.

She said the tricycles, whose franchises will be canceled, are operating in five far-flung barangays of this city.

Of the total, 115 of the tricycles with unrenewed franchise are operating in Barangay Vitali; 106 in Ayala; 49 in Curuan; and 39 in Manicahan.

One of the reasons why the operators did not renew their franchise to operate tricycles is they have possibly found another means of livelihood.

“We presume that for the last three years, they have found alternative means of livelihood aside from tricycle operation since they have not renewed their franchise,” Agan said.

Meanwhile, Agan said the City Council has amended Ordinance 185, which calls for the modernization of the tricycle units operating in this city.
