ILOILO CITY — The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Friday launched the sorghum development program in research stations based in towns of Sigma and Dao, both in Capiz province, as one of the priority programs of the department to support rice and corn sufficiency.

Engr. Remelyn Recoter, regional executive director of the Department of Agriculture-Western Visayas, said the program is “more of a suitability trial”.

“Sorghum can be used as alternative feed ingredient and alternative staple,” she said in a phone interview.

Once they found the sorghum to be suitable, then they will find a farmer cooperator to disseminate the information and identify additional target areas for the sorghum plantation.

“For feeds purposes, we can link the farmers with livestock and poultry raisers,” she said.

Sorghum is one of the ingredients of feeds. Once it is already sufficient, then feed millers can just get their supply of the ingredient from the farmers rather than getting it from other regions or abroad.

Aside from supply to feed millers, they can also use it for their own consumption if they are raising livestock and poultry, she added.

From Capiz, DA intends to launch the program in Antique and Negros Occidental research stations next week.
