SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique – Three elementary pupils of the Delegate Angel Salazar Jr. Memorial School (DASJMS) received cash incentive from the Antique provincial government for winning in the Department of Education (DepEd) Regional Scilympics held in Cadiz, Negros Occidental.

Travis Jim C. Alicante, Benjamin Ford M. Cepe and Lee Arkin C. Gervacio were accompanied by their Science class adviser, Benjie C. Alejo, when they each received PHP7,000 from Governor Rhodora J. Cadiao on Monday.

Alejo said the Grade 6 pupils from Antique won for the first time in the regional Scilympics for their robot invention entry.

“We call the robot invention as Project Metamorphosis and it is intended to save lives,” Alejo said. His wife Charis M. Alejo serves as his co-adviser.

Alejo said the robot invention has eight sensors capable of detecting environmental hazards such as smoke and strong wind velocity.

“The robot can initially be sent when there is a smoke so that the worker can prepare to use the necessary complete personal protective gear upon the detection of the danger to prevent harm,” he said.

Cepe, who is the team leader, said their robot could be likened to a caterpillar because it could climb.

“Our invention is unique for it could perform many things,” he said.

Cepe said it took them about a month to finish their invention, which landed first place in November last year among the inventions of pupils, some of whom are from other DepEd divisions in Western Visayas.

Happy for bringing pride to the province, Cepe thanked the support of the provincial government even as they prepare for the national Science and Engineering Fair to be held on February 2-3 in Baguio City.
