MANILA — AirAsia Philippines announced on Friday that it will begin flights between Kalibo, Aklan and three Chinese destinations — Macau, Kunming, and Chengdu — in the first quarter of the year.

The airline’s chief executive officer, Dexter Comendador, earlier told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) he was eyeing to open more routes to China in 2019.

Currently, the AirAsia Group has routes to Macau, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen.

Comendador said that next to China Airlines, the AirAsia Group is the second largest airline in terms of passengers being carried to China.

The airline will commence its Kalibo-Chengdu route on Jan. 24, Kalibo-Kunming on Jan. 25 and Kalibo-Macau on March 2.

Meanwhile, Comendador added that he is also planning to increase AirAsia Philippines’ flight frequencies to China.

Aside from new Chinese destinations, the executive also plan to open new routes to Japan this year.

“It will most likely be in Osaka or in Narita,” he said.
