LEGAZPI CITY —- The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has raised Alert Level 4 over Mt. Mayon after the volcano spewed a 10-kilometer high ash column at noontime today, Monday.

Mayor Noel Rosal ordered the immediate evacuation of residents, even as Albay Public Safety Emergency Management Office (APSEMO) head Cedric Daep said classes in all levels in both public and private schools in Albay are now suspended.

Paul Alanis of Phivolcs said they have recommended the extension of the danger zone up to eight (8) kilometers, which means areas within this are now declared “no man’s land”.

Today’s eruption was both phreatic and volcanic, he said, adding that with this development, a hazardous eruption can be expected anytime. (PNA)
