All set for first PH subway system

The construction of the first subway train system in the Philippines is now ready.

This was affirmed by the virtual signing ceremony between the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Japan Transport Engineering Company, and Sumitomo Corporation Joint Venture for the construction of the Metro Manila Subway Project Phase 1.

The signing ceremony was led by DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade and Sumitomo Corporation General Manager for Social Infrastructure Business Division Hidemasa Kowasa.

The 34-kilometer subway project is expected to shorten travel time from Quezon City to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) from more than an hour to just 30 minutes.

It can be recalled that the DOTr and the Department of National Defense (DND) signed an agreement to use the latter’s land properties for the subway construction. The first batch of tunnel boring machines which were purchased are set for delivery in September.

State-of-the-art technology will be utilized in the project and will provide a more comfortable means of traveling for Filipino commuters. – PTV News
