SHANGHAI, CHINA — Anchored on a vision to strengthen government media operations, Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar visited top multimedia state-owned companies here on November 24, aimed at securing bilateral communications agreements to boost government media platforms.

Andanar met with the executives of three Shanghai multimedia companies, seeking to explore collaboration with the PCOO.

Andanar met with Mr. Xu Shiping, Eastday Co. Ltd. president and editor-in-chief, where they explored opportunities for cooperative media projects.

The PCOO chief vowed to streamline government media operations under his watch, and pledged to strengthen the government’s communication arm.

Eastday president showed Andanar how the company attracted 100 million netizens in less than 20 years and how they were able to transform it into a multi-billion company.

The Oriental Pearl Tower and the China Eastern Airline are partly owned by Shanghai Eastday Co. Ltd.

Andanar also visited one of China’s largest media and cultural conglomerates, the Shanghai Media Group (SMG), where he discussed projects with the company’s vice-president, Chen Yuren.

The last company Andanar visited was the Shanghai United Media Group (SUMG), the leading newsprint company in Shanghai, which runs two well-respected newspaper groups, Jeifang Daily Group and Wenhui-Xinmin United Media.

Andanar met the company’s director for external relations Mr. Xia Jun and General Manager Mr. Chen Qiwei, to explore projects aimed at delivering innovative communication programs to the public.

The Shanghai leg was part of the four-day China trip of Andanar, where he attended the China-ASEAN Information Ministerial Meeting held in Suzhou, China, from November 21 to 23.

Last December 2016, Andanar visited Singapore to explore opportunities in improving media policy and information exchange.
