More anti-divorce bill signatures gathered

DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental – Some 5,000 more signatures supporting the campaign against the divorce bill in the Philippines have been gathered from the different parishes of the Diocese of Dumaguete.

This is in addition to the almost 6,000 signatures earlier submitted to Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III, in protest of the proposed divorce bill, said William Ablong, president of the Diocesan Council of the Laity and the Diocesan Organization of Renewal Movements and Communities (DORMC).

However, the latest addition of signatures will no longer be forwarded, particularly to the Senate, because it is costly to have them book-bound, Ablong explained Monday in an interview.

Both groups spearheaded the signature campaign several weeks ago and sent the signatures to Sen. Pimentel two weeks ago.

Ablong stressed that they will still continue with their campaign protesting the proposed divorce bill.

“We will continue with our campaign,” said Ablong , through dialogues and other activities, such as the ownership meeting of the Dumaguete Cathedral Credit Cooperative (DCCCO), where he sits as chair of the Board of Directors.

“We have a Family Life Program here at DCCCO and so we incorporate that teaching about married life, how to be faithful to one (partner), and not to be separated from your spouse,” he said.

This will continue also at the level of the religious organizations, and in fact, this coming Pentecost Sunday, the divorce bill will also be tackled, he said.

The Diocese of Dumaguete covers the towns and cities of Negros Oriental from Basay to Jimalalud and the entire neighboring island-province of Siquijor. (Mary Judaline Partlow/PNA)
