SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique — The municipal government of San Jose de Buenavista, Antique’s capital, will strengthen the implementation of the solid waste management (SWM) program this 2019, with “no segregation, no collection” order as a first step.

Mayor Elmer Untaran, in an interview Wednesday, said that since last year, his administration had been addressing the traffic problem, and economic development, as well as the medical needs of the people. This year he will focus on the SWM.

“The missing link now is the SWM, which I want to focus on for the year,” he said.

He said that in fact, there is now a non-government organization (NGO), which he did not identify, that has oriented and will be working with the local government unit on responsible collection of garbage.

“Our municipal dumpsite is now almost full so I gave instruction to the waste collectors that no segregation, no collection,” he said.

He said residents are advised to segregate their wastes and only those that could not be recycled or reused would be collected.

“There are wastes that could even be made into organic fertilizer,” he said.

He said the local government unit is also acceding to the requests of the barangays for them to establish a material recovery facility and that they will be provided with a vehicle to collect wastes.
