Asusano bags 2nd gold in ASEAN Para Games

KUALA LUMPUR — Cendy Asusano reigned supreme anew during the first hour of competition of the 9th ASEAN Para Games at the National Stadium here Thursday, collecting her second individual gold in athletics.

The native of Albay province in Bicol region, who gave the Philippines its first gold in the Para Games, snatched another gold in the F54 category of the women’s discus throw with a superb throw of 14.06 meters.

The 27-year old Asusano, a newcomer to the games, posted her golden performance on her sixth and final attempt.

“Nagsimula lang sa pangarap na sana mabigyan ako ng pagkakataong makasali sa ganitong klaseng paligsahan (This started with a dream that I would be given a chance to join this kind of competition),” she said.

“Bilang ina, masakit sa kalooban ko na iwanan ang aking batang anak para lang makapag-training. Eto, nagbunga rin ang mga sakripisyo (As a mother, it is difficult for me to leave my child as I train. This is the fruit of my sacrifices),” she added.

“May pangarap ako sa aking anak (I have dreams for my child),” said the teary-eyed Asusano, who lives in Sta. Maria, Bulacan. Her parents look after her three-year-old daughter, Shantal Mengarine.

Asusano seized her first gold in the F54/55 category of the women’s javelin throw last Monday.

She is a double gold medalist (javelin and discus throw events) in the 2015 Philippine National Games (PNG), a sports program of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) – the government sports body. (PNA)
