Bacolod City unveils 2018 MassKara Festival logo, theme

BACOLOD CITY — The 2018 MassKara Festival logo and theme were unveiled on Wednesday to highlight this year’s celebration of the 80th birthday of Bacolod.

Festival director Eli Tajanlangit, in a statement, said for the first time the MassKara logo has the theme of the festival, “Happy Birthday, Bacolod,” in bigger fonts than the words “MassKara Festival.”

“This is to emphasize that this year’s MassKara celebrates a milestone bigger than the festival — the 80th birthday of the city,” he added.

The design was presented to the public for the first time by Councilor Em Ang, action officer of MassKara Festival, during the meeting of the Rotary Club of Bacolod North on Wednesday.

The festival organizers tapped anew digital artist Mark Lester Jarmin, who specializes in character logos for international clientele, to make the logo for MassKara’s 39th year. He also designed last year’s logo.

This year, the logo shows a MassKara dancer peeking through the first letter “O” in the word “Bacolod.”

Jarmin said the design shows the dancer wearing a mask with eight colorful feathers representing eight decades of the city.

It also shows silhouettes of a human figure representing the people of Bacolod behind the masks and a black and white checkered pattern representing one of Bacolod’s landmarks — the public plaza’s checkered steps, he added.

Jarmin said there is a smiling face on the second letter “O” as well, which is an apparent nod to Bacolod’s “City of Smiles” tagline.

The 39th MassKara Festival will officially start on October 8, with highlights scheduled on October 26-28.

The festival’s 39th edition will culminate on October 28 in accordance with the ordinance setting the fourth Sunday of October as the permanent date of the highlights.

The main events will be held in the three festival sites — the Bacolod Public Plaza, Lacson Tourism Strip, and Bacolod City Government Center grounds. (Nanette Guadalquiver/PNA)
