Banks ‘business as usual’ in Mayon-affected areas

MANILA — The Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP) has assured bank clients in areas affected by the looming eruption of Mayon Volcano of continued bank services.

In a statement, the BAP called on affected people to simply coordinate with their local bank branches “to ensure that their transactions are accommodated and that their banking needs are met.”

“While the authorities have already raised the alert level in Albay due to ash emissions and lava flow, the BAP assures that clients will be assisted to ensure continuity of banking services, as member banks strive to deliver and serve the general public,” it said.

The BAP also urges the banking public “to follow security and risk mitigation measures of local government units and other relevant law enforcement agencies on the Mount Mayon eruption.”

“For any other bank-related concerns, please call your respective branches or visit their websites for updates,” it added.

Albay Governor Al Francis Bichara has declared a state of calamity in Albay after the volcano spewed lava Monday night.

Local authorities have ordered the evacuation of thousands of residents to ensure their safety and aids have been secured for the evacuees.

The volcano, known for its near-perfect cone shape, last erupted in 2014. (Joann Villanueva/PNA)
