‘Basag-kotse’ gang busted in Marikina

MANILA — Quezon City Police District (QCPD) operatives busted a group of criminals stealing from parked cars by breaking their windows.

In a report to the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Tuesday, QCPD Director Chief Supt. Joselito Esquivel Jr. announced the arrest of the leader of the Batac “Basag Salamin” Robbery Group and his five members in their hideout in Barangay Tañong, Marikina City on Monday.

Esquivel identified the leader as Julius Batac, 25, and his members as Elvin Duanan, 33, Rodelio Sibug, 52 , Rosana Mae Maramias, 20 , Eugenia Argawanon, 34, and Harlan Requilman, 35.

At about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Benson Bong Paras, 43, parked his silver Toyota Innova (ZTH 772) in front of St. Ignacio’s Hardware along Katipunan Ave. corner Sunrise St., Barangay Milagrosa in Project 4, Quezon City and went to the nearby Daria Steak House.

While inside, Paras saw a man peeped into his vehicle, picked up a stone, and smashed the window at the driver’s side, prompting Paras to rush outside and get hold of the suspect.

Two men on a motorcycle arrived and, at gunpoint, ordered Paras to let go of their companion. The armed suspects forcibly took the victim’s cell phone worth PHP10,000 and cash amounting to PHP2,000 then fled towards Santolan Road.

Early on Monday, a follow-up operation by operatives of the QCPD Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit, Project 4 Police, and Marikina City Police was conducted through the help of a confidential informant that resulted in the arrest of the suspects in their hideout.

Seized from the suspects were a Black Widow Caliber 22 revolver with four ammunitions, one heat-sealed plastic sachet of undetermined quantity of “shabu”, two Yamaha Mio motorcycles with plate number CA 89316 and motorcycle registration number 0401-0324688, one red Euro motorcycle with motorcycle registration number 0301-0486366 and several identification cards, laptops, bags, wallets, wristwatches, two helmets, and other documents believed to have been stolen.

Paras identified Duanan and Requilman as the same persons who arrived on a motorcycle and robbed him of his cellphone and cash.

The suspects are involved in incidents in Metro Manila, some areas in Bulacan, and also in Rizal, including at least 19 cases of “basag salamin” modus in Quezon City alone.

They are set to face charges of robbery. (Benjamin Pulta/PNA)
