MANILA — The head of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission for the Pastoral Care for Migrants and Itinerant People (CBCP-ECMI) on Wednesday urged overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Libya to be cautious and follow the calls of the Philippine embassy for their safety.

“We ask our OFWs in Libya to heed the call of our Philippine embassy to be extra careful, vigilant, and avoid public places,” Bishop Ruperto Santos, chairman of the CBCP-ECMI, said in an interview.

“With dangerous situation and uncertain times in Libya, our OFWs must always listen and follow the instructions of our Philippine Embassy officials. They must think first and foremost of their safety,” he added.

The Bataan prelate issued the appeal after insurgents attacked the Libyan foreign ministry in Tripoli, killing at least three people and injuring several others on Tuesday, December 25.

With this, Santos asked the government not to send Filipino workers there and repatriate OFWs, who would like to come back to the country.

“And also. our government must not deploy nor send OFWs there. Those willing to repatriate, our government must assist and help,” he added.
