BJMP congestion rate in a continuous downtrend

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) has continued its downward trend in the last two quarters this year.

The following monthly congestion rates were recorded by the jail bureau: April (506%), May (495%), June (464%), July (456%), August (440%), September (423%), and October (418%).

The lowest over-all congestion rate for the year was recorded in October at 418 percent from a high of 518 percent last February, which translates to a hundred point percentage decrease.

The marked difference in congestion was due to the intensified implementation of paralegal services and virtual court hearings that aid the speedy disposition of PDL cases.

BJMP chief Jail Director Allan S Iral recognized this development and jail personnel’s efforts, especially those rendering paralegal duties.

“The impact of their diligent service is seen in the continuous decrease of our congestion rates. This manifests the exemplary job our paralegal officers are doing,” said Iral.

“Our aggressive efforts to finish the construction of jail buildings on time paid off with thirty-eight new jail facilities,” he added.

The BJMP is managing 470 city, district, and municipal jails across the country.
