In response to the nationwide dengue epidemic declaration of the Department of Health (DOH), the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology immediately directed all Regional Directors to conduct anti-dengue initiatives in their respective area of responsibility.

BJMP Chief Jail Director Allan S Iral also ordered the jail units to coordinate with their local health units and assists in the information dissemination activities of the health department.

Based on the surveillance report, DOH identified Region VI, followed by CALABARZON, IX, X and XII as areas with the most numbered dengue cases in the country while distinguishing CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, V, VI, VIII, IX and X as regions have already exceeded the epidemic threshold for the past three consecutive weeks.

BJMP’s Directorate for Health Service also issued an advisory on Dengue Preparedness and Outbreak Response in jails detailing the implementation of the DOH’s Enhanced 4-S Strategy against dengue and listing the medical symptoms of the disease.

Among the support program initiatives conducted in BJMP jails is the intensified information education on preventing and controlling dengue being led by jail nurses while the BJMP’s public information arm creates digital information materials to further facilitate the awareness on the DOH’s dengue alert program.

Jail units will also adopt the recently launched “Sabayang 4-0 o’clock Habit para Deng-Get Out”, a dengue- preventive intervention of DOH.

He also encourages jail officers to spearhead massive information dissemination campaigns on dengue prevention especially in schools and communities near the BJMP facilities.
