Blue alert raised in Cordillera due to LPA

By Liza Agoot/Philippine News Agency

BAGUIO CITY — The Cordillera Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC) raised the region’s alert level to “blue” as the low-pressure area (LPA) spotted off Aurora may develop into a tropical depression, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said on Monday.

“We are on blue alert. This mandates all DRRM councils to monitor incidents in their respective areas of jurisdiction and constantly inform the CDRRMC,” Albert Mogol, OCD regional director and CDRRMC chairman, told media on the sidelines of the joint Regional Development Council- Regional Peace and Order Council meeting on Monday at The Mansion House.

The CDRRMC raised the alert level as early as 4 p.m. on June 23, following the LPA’s entry in the Philippine area of responsibility.

Mogol said the Mines and Geosciences Bureau in the region has issued an updated list of geohazard, flood-prone and landslide-prone areas from the provincial, municipal and the barangay level.

The list provides concerned local government units specific information on disasters common in the area, as well as different levels of susceptibility. This would allow LGUs to craft appropriate responses during disasters to avoid the loss of lives in case of a heavy downpour.

As of 10 a.m. on Monday, the LPA was located at 760 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora. The LPA may develop into a tropical depression within 48 hours, based on the latest advisory from the CDRRMC.

In case the LPA develops into a tropical depression while inside the PAR, it will be named “Dodong”.

The public is advised to continue monitoring for updates.
