Boholanos remember strong earthquake

TAGBILARAN CITY — Boholanos commemorated on Sunday the fourth anniversary of the strong earthquake that hit the island province on Oct. 15, 2013 and how the experience made them more resilient against disasters.

Governor Edgar Chatto led the series of commemoration activities held here and Loay town.

Chatto said the earthquake has created an indelible mark in the history of Bohol and brought about the now-renowned “Boholano resiliency.”

The Boholanos learned the essence of cooperation and mutual trust among each other out of the experience.

After the earthquake four years ago, Bohol came out unscathed from other disasters, both natural and man-made, that followed and the province and its people remain strong.

To date, the province remains to be a tourism powerhouse in the country as it has shown the ability to host, not just tourists, but big international meetings and conventions.

Data from Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) head Anthony Damalerio said 965 rebuilding projects after the earthquake have been completed.

Meanwhile, a branch of the National Museum also had a soft opening at the old Capitol building, which was abandoned after the earthquake.

A new Bohol Capitol building is currently being constructed and expected to be completed by first quarter of 2018.

Other commemoration activities included the formal turnover of the Holy Trinity Parish Church in Loay to the Diocese of Tagbilaran from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and the opening of the Loay Museum. (PNA)
