BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan — Tourists visiting Boracay can expect a completely rehabilitated road by Christmas season, Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar said as he led another inspection of roads from Cagban to Bulabog Road here Thursday.

To date, Phase I of the road rehabilitation is already 85 percent done. Once completed, the 4.1-km. road network from Cagban Port to the Elizalde Property will have completely paved sidewalks, Villar said.

“We are almost done. We are now working on the finishing touches,” he added.

He said the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is just waiting for utility companies to finish their pipe-laying works to complete the concreting of roads.

In terms of road concreting, it is already 93 percent done, Villar said.

Likewise, the transfer of electric poles and lines along the island’s main road is also being fast-tracked.

After Phase I, the DPWH will push through with the second phase of the road rehabilitation that will start “beginning of next year,” the public works chief added.

Phase II will consist of 3.5 km. of roads from the end of the Elizalde Property in Station 1 up to the City Mall area in Barangay Balabag. The remaining road network will also be upgraded and will have the same features as Phase I, he said.

During the island’s six-month rehabilitation, roads were widened to 12 meters.
