BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan — Regular operation of water sports activities in Boracay Island will resume by the first week of December, Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu said.

In an interview on Wednesday, Cimatu said the suspension of water sports activities is only temporary to give way to the marine biodiversity assessment of the island.

He said on the Oct. 26 reopening of the island, non-motorized water sports activities will already be allowed aside from swimming activities.

Once the island reopens, he said there will be designated areas for each water sports activity.

The first layer would be the swimming area while non-motorized water sports including kayak and paddle boards will be on the second layer.

The third layer, which should be about 400 meters away from the shoreline, will be for motorized and other sports activities including jet ski, Cimatu added.

Cimatu said other sports activities will also be resumed once activities on the island are stabilized.

”We just need to stabilize first, to allow them to adjust on the changes,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Boracay Inter-agency Task Force for Boracay Rehabilitation and the Boracay Business Administration of Scuba Shops or BBASS are expected to sign a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the conduct of a marine biodiversity assessment.

The MOA signing is one of the activities scheduled on the first day of the reopening dry run on October 15. (Karen Bermejo/PNA)
