BRP Tarlac now in Russian waters

MANILA – Strategic sealift vessel BRP Tarlac (LD-601) is now officially on Russian waters as of Sunday afternoon.

This was disclosed by Philippine Navy (PN) spokesperson, Commander Jonathan Zata, in a statement sent to reporters late Sunday.

“At one o’clock in the afternoon (local time) of September 30, 2018, the PN landing dock ship, BRP Tarlac (LD-601) with helicopter detachment afloat entered here at the vicinity of Mys Yelagina for a port visit to Vladivostok, Russia. A customary procedure was conducted upon the entering in the Russian waters of BRP Tarlac,” Zata said.

He said a Russian anti-submarine warship, Sovetskaya Gavan (P-350), welcomed the PN vessel as she escorted the ship enroute to Vladivostok, Russia.

BRP Tarlac’s first ever port visit to Russia will be conducted from Oct. 1 to 6. She left Manila South Harbor last Sept. 21.

Zata said the PN contingent, led by Captain Florante Gagua, will conduct a series of confidence building activities with the Russian Navy in order to further enhance relationship and cooperation.

These include the visit to Russian Navy facilities and sports and cultural interaction. Sea exercises will likewise be undertaken after conclusion of the port visit.

“The activity conveys the Command’s commitment in promoting multilateral cooperation. It is an affirmation of its commitment in collaborating with other navies to promote peace and stability in the maritime region,” he said. (Priam Nepomuceno/PNA)
