The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) Anti-Cybercrime Group filed a complaint against a 24-year old TikTok user who was caught in a video burning a P20 banknote.
A video that went viral on social media showed alias “Jam Jaren” burning the banknote.
“We will pursue this case until conviction,” BSP’s Payments and Currency Management Sector Deputy Governor Mamerto Tangonan said in a statement.
“We assure the public that BSP shall continue to protect the integrity of our currency.” Tangonan added.
Under the Presidential Decree No. 247, the willful defacement, mutilation, tearing, burning, or destruction of Philippine banknotes and coins is unlawful and punishable by imprisonment of up to five years and a fine not exceeding P20,000.
The BSP asked the public to report any similar incident to the BSP Payments and Currency Investigation Group via [email protected]. – gb
